Summary
Szlachetko D. L., Kolanowska M. & Eichmann A. 2018. A new species of Ponthieva (Orchidaceae-Spiranthoideae) from northern Ecuador. – Phyton (Horn, Austria) 58 (2): 131–133, with 2 figures.*
A new species of Ponthieva, P. napoensis was discovered during revision of Ecuadorian orchid material and is described as new to science. The novelty resembles P. gracilis in habit and P. lilacina in flower morphology. The first species differs from P. napoensis by the narrowly falcate-triangular petal lamina, which is acute at both ends, and by the lip ornamented with a single, transverse callus at the base. Unlike the novelty, P. lilacina has obliquely oblong-triangular petals, which are truncate at the base, and a prominently callous, pendent and flat lip. Illustrations of flower characters of P. napoensis and P. lilacina are provided.
