Freitas, L.W.S., Ho, H.-M., Melo R.F.R. & Santiago A.L.C.M. (2020) Syncephalis alagoensis, a new species of Zoopagales (Zoopagomycota) from the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. – Sydowia 72: 35–38.

A new species of Syncephalis was found to parasitize a species of Cunninghamella in a soil sample collected from an Atlantic Forest area in northeastern Brazil. Syncephalis alagoensis is distinguished by the production of erect to slightly tortuous merosporangiophores, as well as unbranched merosporangia containing up to three long, elliptical to fusiform merospores, occasionally slightly curved, formed over a globose, subglobose or elliptical, smooth-walled vesicle. Herein, a key for the species of Syncephalis found in the Neotropics is provided.
