Summary

Sahney M. & Shukla V. 2013. On the stem anatomy of Antigonon leptopus (Polygonaceae). – Phyton (Horn, Austria) 53 (1): 163–168, with 1 figure.

The paper presents anatomical features of young stem of Antigonon leptopus Hook. & Arn. Epidermis shows presence of two types of hairs (unicellular and multicellular) and mucilage secreting glandular trichomes. The ring of vascular bundle consists of five small and five large vascular bundles which alternate with each other. In two of the large vascular bundles procambium strands give rise to phloem only and no xylem elements are formed opposite to the phloem. Later fascicular cambium differentiates inner to the phloem and forms xylem elements. Vascular bundles show presence of intraxylary phloem except in the two large vascular bundles. Calcium oxalate crystals (druses & styloids), tannin and starch grains are present in the cortex and pith cells. Findings are correlated with the habit of the plant.
