Taphrina padi is a plant pathogenic fungal species belonging to the family Taphrinaceae and is associated with fruit pocket disease on Prunus padus. To date, this species has been documented exclusively in Europe. We document the first occurrence of fruit pocket disease on P. padus in Korea and present detailed illustrations of disease symptoms and microscopic observations.
Based on polyphasic characterization of morphological and physiological traits and molecular-phylogenetic analysis of the fungus isolated from symptomatic fruits, the isolates were identified as T. padi. Thus, this study represents the first report of T. padi as a pathogen of Prunus padus in Asia and provides comprehensive information on Asian isolates.
